He writes in disk magazine "Record-geijutsu" that he have got a photocopy of some recording-cards of Pathetique Symphony made by German Telefunken. *This set has both versions of 78s by Telefunken and Ultraphon. It is noted that there is a significant difference between the two versions in the second movement. Probably, different microphones were simultaneously used for the two versions. The two performances themselves sound identical to each other, but the tone balance sounds different.

This recording is available only on Teldec's CD, 3984-28408-2, although Teldec states that it is taken from the 1937 version. This 1942 version is the remake one of the famous 1937 version. According to Mark Obert-Thorn's note on a booklet in Pearl's GEMS 0074, this brand-new recoding succeeded the former matrix numbers for 1937 version. No reports are given that 78s of the brand-new version are found. This suggests that Teldec maintains some metal masters even after the war and floods.

    Berliner Rundfunksorchester
    recorded in January 28th, 1942.
This recording was believed to be made in 1939, but it has been clarified that it was made on January 28, 1942, in Berlin.

This information was published in an issue of the Dutch Mengelberg Society, which was copied by Mike Gray for Eric Derom. Eric's e-mail was forwarded by Frank Forman as follows. (TH)

In the last magazine of the Dutch Mengelberg Society, an undated article was published that I got from Mike Gray and edited for the magazine. The article came from the magazine of German Radio (RRG). In that article, a concert given by Mengelberg with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra is mentioned, the program mentioning Dutch music and Beethoven 7th. In that paper, it is also mentioned that the Beethoven was recorded for later broadcast. In the archives of Dutch radio, a Beethoven 7th exists, played by the same orchestra, and now available on CD, e.g. No. 5 in Michael Thomas' Mengelberg collection. He dates it 1939/40.Further research by the editorial board of the Dutch W.M. Society makes it possible to attribute an exact date to this live recording:It took place at the Great Concert Hall of German Radio at the Masurenallee, in Berlin, on January 28th, 1942.I suggest that you divulgate this interesting finding resulting from a collaborative effort of Mike Gray, myself, and the editorial board of the Dutch W.M. Society in your newsletter. Kind regards,Eric

    Subject: Re: Mengelberg - Tristan
Nice to have the occasion to mail you for the first time. You have the reputation of knowing all Mengeberg recordings. I am unaware that there are two recordings of the Tristan prelude & Liebestod. Could you tell me more about that? Lables, dates, etc...?
I believe there are several lables claiming to have the Tristan Prelude on LP or CD. I have one or two of these. Honestly, I never compared them thoroughly, but I alwways supposed that they were the same. Is there any evidence that there are differences? And if so, can you identifiy them? In one of the recordings I have, the falsification is a very obvious, as has been pointed out by members of the Dutch Mengelberg Society. I believe that in the Michael Thomas recording (or was it another Japanese label), you clearly hear that the source used to let hear Mengelberg knocking the desk with his batton is different from the source from which the music originates. Two different sources are put together, that is not difficult to hear at all (differences in hiss, an a clear joint of two tapes). Listening to the differrent Tristan prelude recordings with the Concertgebouw in the archives of Holland Radio, Johan Maarsingh discovered that what has been claimed to be conducted by Mengelberg, was exactly the same recording the have in the archives, but conducted by Pierre Monteux in 1952. I am waiting for your undoubtedly interesting reply.

    Concertgebouworkest, Amsterdam
recorded on Thu. May 26, 1940, at Concertgebouw, Amsterdam
under the direction of Eduard van Beinum.
This fragment recording was believed to be conducted by Willem Mengelberg. When I made an inquiry to Radio Hilvelsum, a reply was given that it was truly conducted by Mengelberg for Tschaikovsky's 100th anniversary after his birth (1840). Nevetheless, an eleven-fold CD set for Eduard van Beinum was issued in the late 2000, in which it was cleared that the fragment recording was due to Beinum, since Mengelberg was not available in Amsterdam. The concert was scheduled to be given by Mengelberg, and it was printed on programs that the conductor was Mengelberg. This is why the recording was believed to be due to Mengelberg. Further investigation, however, clarified that Mengelberg was in Berlin at that time, and he could not return to Amsterdam. Beinum conducted the concert in place of Mengelberg.
Q-disk's track enables us to believe that the fragment is truly conducted by Beinum, not by Mengelberg. This CD merges the rest movements made in 1941 (also by Beinum) with the last movement into one complete symphony.
